Rosemary Boucaut
Freda (Rosemary) Boucaut (1930-2014) was elected as Councillor of the Robe Ward of the City of Adelaide in 1979 and retired in 1995 after 16 years of service as Councillor and Alderman (1989-1995) and Lady Mayoress (1983-1985).
During this time she was Chairperson of the Works and Parks Committee and an active member of the North Adelaide Society.
Born in India, Boucaut trained as a nurse at the Royal London Hospital before marrying and relocating to South Australia. She undertook further studies with the Family Planning Association in England; on her return to Adelaide she became the city’s first family planning nurse.
In 1972, Boucaut was awarded a Churchill Scholarship to study family planning in hospitals worldwide. She worked at the Queen Victoria Hospital in the gynaecological ward, as a counsellor, and oversaw the new family planning clinic, before becoming Director of Staff Counselling at the Women and Children’s Hospital.
