Green Bin Tip Stops
Find our Green Bin Tip Stops!
Discover our Green Bin Tip Stops planted along Rundle Mall, from King William Street to Gawler Place, to learn about the benefits of food waste and compostable packaging when placed in the green organics bin. Did you know the items you place in green bins can be turned into nutrient-rich compost and become valuable materials for the environment? By disposing of your food waste and compostable packaging in our green bins, you’ll be contributing to a circular economy and the growth of local South Australian produce. The compost produced from your food waste and compostable packaging is used in soils on South Australian farms, vineyards and orchards to grow our food.
Your green bin waste is as good as gold!
It's not just food that belongs in the green bin. Check your food packaging for Certified Compostable labels. Items such as paper napkins, greasy cardboard, and compostable cutlery also belong in the green bin.
Through an 8-10 week process of adding microbes, controlling temperature, and filtering contaminants, green waste is turned into compost. This compost creates nutrient-rich soil to grow our food. By putting your waste to work on South Australian farms, orchards, and vineyards, you contribute to a circular economy.
Look for the seedling logo on your coffee cup!
An estimated one billion takeaway coffee cups end up in landfill in Australia every year. Do your bit and look out for the certified compostable seedling logo on your next coffee cup. If you see the logo, dispose in the green bin!
Compostable packaging has no microplastics, which can't dissolve in nature and contaminate the environment; potentially leading to microplastics in our food chain! Putting compostable packaging in the green bin is a simple way to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill.
Put your green bin waste to work to flex your green thumb!
Take your green garden material to our Green Waste and Mulch Centre, and our team will process it into high quality mulch!
Not only does mulch make your garden look great, but it also has a number of benefits for your garden:
- Helps retain moisture in the soil
- Cools the root zone of plants which lowers transpiration of moisture from the plant
- Builds soil structure and adds nutrients (fertilizer is still recommended)
- Aids micro-organisms that are beneficial to plants and soil
- Helps prevent salinity problems by reducing evaporation
- Introduces organic material into poor soils
Stop and Sort at our Food Waste and Compostables Recycling Zone in Rundle Mall!
In collaboration with Green Industries SA, the City of Adelaide is trialling a new multi-bin system to encourage people in Rundle Mall to stop and sort their food waste, compostable packaging, and cans & bottles. The trial aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and will inform future Food Waste and Compostable Recycling Zones in the city. Let's work together towards less waste!
