Dr Jane Lomax-Smith AM

Dr Jane Lomax-Smith (1950-) was the first female Lord Mayor of Adelaide to be elected a State Member of Parliament. Lomax-Smith served as City Councillor from 1991-1997, and as Lord Mayor from 1997-2000.

In 2002 she was elected to the South Australian Parliament as Member for Adelaide and held ministerial portfolios for Education, Mental Health and Substance Abuse, and Tourism.

Born in London, Lomax-Smith studied at the London Hospital Medical School, and worked as a clinical pathologist, medical researcher and teacher in London, Boston and Adelaide. She established and ran her own pathology practice in Adelaide, before pursuing a career in local and state government.

In 2013, Lomax-Smith was recognised with a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the Parliament and the community of South Australia. Lomax-Smith is Chair of the South Australian Museum Board and a Director of Adelaide’s iconic JamFactory.
