Streetside Activation Grants

Please note, funding for the Streetside Activation Grant is now exhausted and we are no longer accepting applications.

As a part of Reignite Adelaide, the City of Adelaide, with the support of a grant from the Government of South Australia, are delivering Streetside Activation Grants to support existing city businesses to expand their offerings outdoors and activate the footpath, street, or Park Lands in a COVID-Safe manner.

If you have an idea to activate your business by bringing it outdoors, or want to trial something different to attract customers and promote your business in a new way, we want to hear from you.

Eligible businesses can apply for $5,000 grants to help fund temporary infrastructure, events, promotional activities or other aspects needed to trial bringing something new to the outdoors in your area.

The Program is being delivered from February 2022 to June 2022.

Eligibility

The Streetside Activation Grant is available to businesses within the City of Adelaide that:

  • are an existing, fixed business with the City of Adelaide
  • can explain their idea for activation and what support and amenities are required
  • submit a brief application to ensure activities are safe and the use of public space is managed
  • targets short term/temporary initiatives to run between now and June 2022

Applications are not limited to street-level businesses – we want to hear from any business with an idea to activate their area.

Grant usage

Grants are provided to support existing, fixed businesses in the city to activate the public realm and expand their offerings outdoors and onto the footpath, street, or Park Lands in a COVID-Safe manner. This may include:

  • supporting new concepts and ideas for attracting customers
  • providing temporary infrastructure to facilitate outdoor activations
  • other support required to fulfil and promote the idea/ request

Examples of activation may include:

  • a salon conducting services on the street, rather than in an enclosed venue
  • a temporary installation of an art-work outside a business to draw visitation
  • a retail business hosting a pop-up stall of their products on the street
  • a massage therapist offering head and shoulder massages on the street
  • a hospitality venue hosting a pop-up art show outside of their venue
  • new ways to promote a non-ground level business from the street
  • having musicians playing outside their venue

Frequently asked questions

The Program is targeted towards businesses with a physical presence (i.e. be a ‘bricks and mortar’ business) located within the City of Adelaide local government area. If this isn’t you, applications would need to clearly demonstrate how it would assist in attracting visitation to the City and supporting local businesses in the area.

The Streetside Activation Grants are not aimed at hospitality businesses replacing or updating standard/existing outdoor dining furniture on a like-for-like basis, for which other grants and initiatives already cater for. However, new concepts from hospitality businesses are encouraged.

Funding is not a requirement of the grant when submitting an idea or request. If the outdoor activation can occur without the need for funding it is encouraged.

Permits may be required depending on the activation being considered. We will provide advice on this as part of the assessment process once an application is submitted. Most City of Adelaide permit fees have already been waived through Reignite Adelaide campaigns. Should fees be required that cannot be facilitated via the Grant scheme, we will discuss this with you during the process.

Each application for the Streetside Activation Program will be assessed on its own merit on a case-by-case basis. Decision making will be guided by safety and access requirements within existing policies, with consideration given to trialling new concepts and being flexible.
